Good Governance Project ContinuesThe first stages of the Good Governance Project have nearly been completed and have consisted of an independent expert review of Council’s decision making processes. By Latrobe City Council - 4th November 2003 - Back to News The first stages of the Good Governance Project have nearly been completed and have consisted of an independent expert review of Council’s decision making processes including meeting arrangements, and etiquette, the roles and responsibilities of Councillors and the organisation’s executive management.
Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Hancock, said that he was really encouraged by the work undertaken to date and the commitment to the process shown by Councillors and executive management. A range of organisations and individuals in the community have also provided input to the review. Their input has been greatly appreciated and an update will be provided to them in the near future.
"To date the review has indicated that Council’s decision making processes and other governance practices are consistent with the industry, and there are a range of areas in which improvements could be made in the future. During the process of the review, a number of common themes are emerging including the desire for greater unity and vision and a move away from division. These are all important governance issues and will be considered in the next stages of the project" he said.
This is one of the most significant projects undertaken by the organisation with the overall aim of establishing and implementing a Good Governance Protocol that amongst other things improves and clearly communicates Council’s decision making processes to the community" Mr Hancock explained.
Council is being assisted with the project by The Strategy Shop and Exintel Pty Ltd. "Both organisations have had extensive experience in the field, particularly in relation to the review of governance practices in local government and the draft good governance guide; both of which were joint projects commissioned by the Municipal Association of Victoria, the Victorian Local Governance Association and the Department of Infrastructure," Mr Hancock said.
"We are extremely fortunate to have these two organisations undertaking the project. They have been instrumental in a number of key initiatives being undertaken in the industry and have done a number of other projects with local government authorities. They are highly respected in the industry and bring with them a lot of expertise and credibility," Mr Hancock said.
