Traralgon Train Roundhouse Gets A Facelift Traralgon’s rare railway roundhouse, built in 1902, has received a major facelift courtesy of VicTrack’s Heritage Program, Russell Northe, Member for Morwell, said today. By Russell Northe - 13th June 2012 - Back to News "The roundhouse, which is historically important as evidence of Traralgon’s status as a railway depot, has had a new roof, gutters and downpipes installed. Fire-damaged sections of the building have also been replaced, the machinery room has been cleaned up and the weeds around the building have been cleared," Mr Northe said.
VicTrack, custodial owner of Victoria’s rail land and property, commissioned Direct Property Services to carry out the $113,000 project.
"The Traralgon Roundhouse is a very rare example of a surviving combination of an engine shed and turntable. The engine shed component is unusual in being a curved engine shed – most were rectangular," said Mr Northe.
"It is one of only two left in Victoria and is older than the other surviving example at Ararat."
Edward O’Donohue, Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Member for Eastern Victoria, said: "It is important that we preserve Victoria’s rail heritage for future generations.
"The Traralgon roundhouse is an outstanding part of the region’s industrial and social history. I welcome this improvement to the fabric of the building, which will keep it intact."
The Gippsland Railway between South Yarra and Sale was opened in stages during the 1870s. Traralgon’s roundhouse was used for goods trains travelling between Gippsland and Melbourne.
Following electrification of the line from Melbourne to Traralgon in March 1956, the engine shed was retained for servicing steam engines still operating to Bairnsdale.
VicTrack commits $1 million annually to its Heritage Program, which restores state heritage-listed rail building assets, mainly in regional Victoria. VicTrack spent $210,000 in 2011 restoring the earthquake damaged Korumburra Station for the South Gippsland Tourist Railway.
