Revisiting the holiday water-saving messageWesternport Water is relaunching the successful ‘Save Water on Holidays’ campaign this summer. By Susan Webster - 3rd December 2007 - Back to News Caravan parks, motels, restaurants and take-away food shops will be targeted in a poster campaign designed to remind visitors along Victoria’s coast just how precious our water supplies are.
Westernport Water’s Managing Director David Mawer said: "Last year’s campaign helped contribute to a dramatic decrease in water usage. Over the nine-day New Year period in 2005/06 we saw average daily water use drop to 6.06ML from 8.9ML the previous year.
"Although the 2006 period was subject to tougher water restrictions, the message appears to be ongoing, even after water restrictions were eased from Stage Four to Stage Two."
Mr Mawer continued: "The campaign helps address full-time residents’ concerns that visitors are not as aware of the need for water conservation in the Westernport region.
"This is the second year we have supported the campaign to encourage all residents – both full-time and holiday visitors – to help conserve our very precious resource."
The Candowie Reservoir is well-filled after augmentation works undertaken by Westernport water. The corporation has eased restrictions to Stage Two and believes that, with restrained public use, supplies will be sufficient until mid 2008.
Westernport Water is supporting the holiday campaign, together with Wannon Water and Barwon Water, which also service Victorian coastal holiday hotspots.
"The campaign message is simple," Mr Mawer said. "It asks holidaymakers to check the local water restrictions. We tell people to have a good time … but to not take a holiday from saving water."
