Latrobe City welcomes Decentralisation campaign

Latrobe City Council has welcomed the Deputy Prime Minister’s Get Out of the City campaign, launched today.

By Portal Admin - 2nd March 2017 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan said the support of Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce to decentralise some government agencies from capital cities to regional areas was a huge win for Latrobe City.

"Decentralisation has been top of the list for our key asks by government," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"We have been consistent in all of our meetings with ministers from all tiers of government, highlighting the importance of this type of support in our period of transition.

"We also have the support in this from our local government counterparts, with Latrobe City Baw Baw and Wellington Shire councils united that decentralisation would be good for all the communities that we represent.

"From our own ASIC experience we know the value of a federal agency. The processing centre is estimated to add approximately $67 million to our economy per annum.

"We also know of the success Geelong has had with the relocation of TAC and WorkSafe as a government support response in the wake of the demise of the car industry," Cr O’Callaghan said.

Latrobe City Council has submitted a response to the Senate Finance and Public Administration References Committee inquiry, highlighting that decentralisation has the opportunity to do three key things - to convey the government’s long term commitment to the economic future of Latrobe City; to provide an immediate increase to the local economy; and to provide a much needed skills based aspiration for our young people.
