Call For Care Around Intersection

The Bass Coast Community Road Safety Committee is calling on residents to continue to be extra vigilant this summer around a hazardous intersection in Lance Creek.

Another collision where the Wonthaggi-Korumburra Road intersects with West Creek Road, Glen Alvie Road and Bird Road in mid-October led to a public show of concern about the danger of the intersection.

Bass Coast Councillor representative on the Community Road Safety Committee Andrew Phillips, said this included people who had themselves been involved in crashes at this intersection and many who had had near misses.

"Inspector Graeme Sprague from Victoria Police highlighted the dangerous intersection as having a large number of crashes over the years that caused serious injuries and many near misses," Cr Phillips said.

"Despite several road safety improvement treatments employed during this time to improve safety, crashes and near misses are still being reported."

Cr Phillips said an onsite meeting was held in early November between VicRoads, Council and Victoria Police.

"The aim of the meeting was to identify short, medium and long term safety improvement actions relating to the intersection," Cr Phillip said.

"Line marking has been reinstated at the intersection and on approaches, and vegetation is being removed along the approaches to the intersection to improve visibility around the intersection.

Council and VicRoads would like to remind users of the roads in the area that whilst these works are undertaken, traffic management will be in place.

"It is essential that all members of the public obey the signage and directions given, for the safety of themselves, other members of the public and the workers," Cr Phillips said.

"In these times, the areas become a work zone, and members of the public should not enter the zone unless travelling in their normal activities."

Committee member and VicRoads Community Road Safety Advisor, Alana Riess, said Council and VicRoads were working together to put in place some medium term safety improvements in relation to rumble strips and improved signage at the location, with some of this work being completed by Christmas.
