Glengarry Mechanics Institute has received a $93,000 grant for restoration works through Victoria’s Heritage Grants, Member for Morwell Russell Northe announced today.

Mr Northe said the restoration project would enable the community hall – the only public hall in the town – to be revitalised and utilised extensively once again.

The Glengarry Mechanics Institute was constructed in 1886 and rebuilt in 1929. It is part of an intact township precinct and is individually listed on the local planning scheme.

Mr Northe said the building was largely unusable at present and the project was to repair the external walls and roof of the building, replacing fabric where required.

He said many community groups had expressed an interest and a need to use the local building which was located in a prominent part of the township.

"The community has identified the rectification of the disrepair is one of the highest priorities," Mr Northe said, "and it will be great to see it restored."

Mr Northe also congratulated the Glengarry Mechanics Institute Committee of Management on their hard work to ensure the repair and restoration of the community facility.

"The involvement of community members is extremely important to make sure our local facilities are in good condition now, and in years to come. I commend the Committee of Management for applying for funding through the Heritage Grants program, and look forward to seeing the hall back better than ever, and utilised by members of the community."

Minister for Planning Matthew Guy said the grant was one of 13 community projects around Victoria being funded to preserve and protect significant heritage places and objects.

He said Victoria’s Heritage Grants supported local communities to care for and manage the state’s rich and diverse heritage, with this year’s program totalling $1.13 million.

Mr Guy said the grants recognised and supported the enthusiasm and commitment of many dedicated volunteer organisations which worked to preserve and safeguard our shared history.

Victoria’s heritage grants support the repair and restoration of publicly accessible and important heritage places and objects managed by local government and community not-for-profit organisations and are provided for places in the Victorian Heritage Register or included in a Heritage Overlay.

Funding for heritage place grants totalling $500,000 was provided by the Victorian Property Fund.
