a low carbon economy.

Minister Simon Crean, Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government and the Deputy Premier of Victoria and Minister for Rural and Regional Development, Peter Ryan signed the memorandum after meeting with key stakeholders during the ministerial visit.

The mayors and chief executive officers of Latrobe City Council, Wellington Shire and Baw Baw Shire attended the meeting. Latrobe City Council mayor, Cr Ed Vermeulen welcomed the efforts by both levels of government in tackling the issues faced by the Latrobe Valley.

"This memorandum cements the promises made by both levels of government to help guide our region through the challenges that transitioning to a low carbon economy will mean. The community can feel assured that we are being listened to, being consulted and being included in decisions about the future of our own region.

"As one of the regions most likely to be affected by the changes to our economy, Latrobe City Council was proud to have hosted this historic event, and we look forward to working with the Federal and State Governments over the coming months to put positive plans into place," Cr Vermeulen said.
