By Sale Art Gallery - 1st March 2005 - Back to News Australia ’s most prestigious award for religious art, the Blake Prize comes to Wellington Shire Council’s Gippsland Art Gallery • Sale . A strictly non-denominational annual award for works exploring religious and spiritual themes in a contemporary way, this touring exhibition will present a selection of this year's judged works including the 2004 winning entry.
Named after the visionary 18th Century poet, spiritualist and artist extraordinaire William Blake, the prize was established in 1949 to promote an open-minded approach by Australian artists to share the meaning of religion with art-lovers.
A number of works in the exhibition display an extravagant vibrancy that challenge accepted views of traditional devotional works of art, with a diverse line-up of visual art forms. Religious art has always played an important role in the lives of many, and works included in this tour have been chosen for their ability to engage a broad range of people across Australia .
The exhibition also includes the 2004 winning entry by artist AñA Wojak. Whose work Pieta ( Darfur ) movingly depicts men mourning a child that has died of malnutrition in the refugee camps of Dafur. It was inspired by press coverage of the ongoing war in Western Sudan . Amidst the horror and despair, this moment of quite dignity and prayer. It is a compassionate work that, unlike the traditional image of the Pieta, addresses men's tears and grief for their loss.
