Want Wellington to be weed free?

Wellington Shire Council is pleased to be part of Wellington Weed Free – a new initiative aiming to raise community awareness of weed issues and build relationships with local organisations.

By Wellington Shire Council - 2nd June 2005 - Back to News

Wellington Weed Free is a council project funded by the State Government through its Tackling Weeds on Private Land - Local Weed Management Grant Program.

A range of partners will be actively involved in the initiative including Maffra & Districts Landcare Network, Yarram Catchments Network and the Department of Primary Industries. Many other groups will be providing input into the project such as East and West Gippsland Catchment Management Authorities, Parks Victoria, the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Trust for Nature, and a variety of community groups and members.

Key components will include weed mapping of the shire, support for a biological control program with local primary schools, the development of a rapid response and weed spotters network, development of the shire’s website and an enhanced Weed for Trees program to manage roadside weeds.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "It’s fantastic to see local organisations banding together to help preserve our very important natural environment. This initiative is something the council is very proud to be involved with and we look forward to working in partnership with the community to deliver it effectively across the shire. We invite any individuals or groups who may wish to become involved in the program to contact the council.
