Baw Baw Shire Council has completed works on the Smith and Queen Street roundabout reducing peak traffic wait times of up to seven minutes to less than one minute.

The duplication of lanes at Smith and Queen Streets roundabout has increased its capacity and reduced queue lengths from all approaches, according to council chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson.

"Anecdotal reports received from members of the community and business owners is that traffic is flowing very well through the roundabout, which has eliminated congestion in this area of the CBD," said Mr Patterson.

"The roundabout performance has exceeded the traffic modelling forecasts and community expectations.

"When the previous roundabout was built, council wanted to make it dual lanes, but unfortunately this was not approved by VicRoads at that time.

"We have now created a dual lane roundabout, which is one approach being taken to reduce traffic congestion in Warragu,l that has proved highly successful," said Mr Patterson.

Council has investigated possible sites for a third railway crossing and is currently preparing detailed concept designs for underpasses at Normanby Street and Latrobe Street, prior to advocating for funding.

Due to costs associated with any additional crossing council is pursuing a number of interim projects that will collectively contribute to eliminating congestion in the CBD.

Council has also established a working group to investigate non-infrastructure related opportunities to reduce traffic congestion, involving business community representatives, schools and public and community transport organisations.
