Comment from Russell Northe

The Latrobe Valley is in an unprecedented period of uncertainty and now, more than ever, we need to fight for our future.

In order to do everything I can to help the people of my community, I have decided to step down from the Shadow Ministry.

Being a Shadow Minister is a great responsibility but the nature of the role regularly takes me out of my electorate. This is time, I believe, that would be better spent helping workers affected by the Hazelwood power station’s closure, and working with industry and community stakeholders to ensure we secure a positive future for the people who want to live and work in the Latrobe Valley.

I’m thankful of the opportunity to serve as Shadow Minister for Liquor and Gaming Regulation and Shadow Minister for Consumer Affairs for the past two years, and I am also grateful for the support of Peter Walsh and Matthew Guy who understand my decision to step down.

Comments from Peter Walsh

Russell is a dedicated local MP who cares very deeply for the communities he represents and he has the full support of his Nationals and Liberal colleagues in making this decision.

While Labor governments have had a policy to shut down Hazelwood since 2010, the fast-tracked closure for April has taken many by surprise and the uncertainty around a transition plan, real replacement jobs, and an affordable future power supply has people worried.

Russell has made the right decision in the best interests of the people that he was elected to represent.
