Mayor of Wellington Shire Council Cr Malcolm Hole said it was a great opportunity for experts across the state to visit the Sale Botanical Gardens.

"We were delighted to welcome representatives from other botanic gardens to look at our gardens and see the hard work that our staff have put in"

"There have been significant changes in and around the gardens in recent years and it is important that we keep up to date with latest developments for botanic gardens"

"Ours is a great place for people and families to use, either to enjoy a walk in the park or to visit whilst using the nearby BBQ and playground facilities, it really is a fantastic asset for the Shire" he said.

The conference included an address by Mr. Peter Ryan, MLA, titled ‘Regional Botanic Gardens – Why are they important to regional communities?’ and a presentation from Wellington Shire Council’s Tourism Development and Marketing Officer Frank Norden focusing on the tourism value of botanic gardens.

An introduction to the gardens was given by the Friends of Sale Botanic Gardens before the group visited the gardens and for a walk and talk lead by Martin Norris, Open Space Planner, Wellington Shire and Peter Synan from the Sale Historical Society

"It was a great forum to share ideas" said Cr Hole.

Richard Barley from the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne chaired the business section of the meeting.

He was joined by Councillor Peter Gault, Councillor Peter Garlick and the Wellington Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb in planting a Californian Redwood at the gardens in recognition of the event during the group’s tour of the Sale Botanic Gardens.
