Night Rider Trial To Be Extended – Permanent Funding SoughtThe Night Rider bus trial service that transports late night revellers from Traralgon’s nightspots to their home towns of Moe, Morwell and Churchill, will be extended a further four weeks to Sunday 14 June. By Latrobe City Council - 11th May 2009 - Back to News Latrobe City Council is also writing to the Minister for Public Transport to request funding support to continue the service indefinitely, following adoption of a resolution at Monday’s council meeting.
Latrobe City councillor and chair of the Traralgon CBD Safety Group, Rohan Fitzgerald, said that the Night Rider service to date had proved its worth.
"From the start of the trial in mid March until the end of April, the Night Rider bus transported 247 people out of the Traralgon’s CBD on Sunday mornings to the designated drop-off points in other towns. This has helped ensure that patrons disperse rapidly once they leave the nightclubs, one of the safety group’s objectives.
"Providing the bus service also reduces the risk of young people taking the inappropriate decision to drive home after consuming alcohol.
"The Night Rider service was scheduled to finish on 17 May but will now be extended to 14 June utilising the last of the Community Roads Safety Grant provided by the Transport Accident Commission.
"Having noted the very positive results of the trial to date, council resolved at its meeting on Monday 4 May to write to the Minister for Public Transport, Lynne Kosky, seeking further funding in order to continue to provide the Night Rider beyond the trial period," Cr Fitzgerald explained.
"In light of the success of the service to date, we encourage entertainment patrons to continue to take advantage of the Night Rider trial, particularly now there is an extension of four weeks, whilst we await the decision from the Minister," Cr Fitzgerald concluded.
