Council Wins Major Award For Outstanding Wastewater Research

By South Gippsland Shire Council - 22nd October 2004 - Back to News

The Victorian Division of the Australian Institute of Environmental Health (A.I.E.H) presented South Gippsland Shire Council with its prestigious award for Outstanding Research in Environmental Health at a Gala Dinner in Melbourne on Tuesday 12th October.

The Award was accepted by Environmental Health Officers, Callum Morrison and Skye Scott who undertook the ‘breakthrough’ research.

" We used a submersible computer probe in a totally new way to detect "warm" wastewater contamination by measuring temperature and water levels in the stormwater drains," explained Callum. "This provides more accurate and cheaper water sampling and all adds to the case for town sewer schemes."

The probe, funded through the" Wastewater Management in coastal settlements of Gippsland" project, measures water quality every three seconds for days and nights on end, recording changes in the water that are otherwise very difficult to measure.

The technology was recently shared with thirty fellow members of the A.I.E.H. at a workshop in Leongatha where it was received with much acclaim by their peers.

"It really clearly presents to the community and the State Government exactly what Council's concerns are, and in really small towns, what alternative sewer designs might be needed." added Callum
