Traralgon Recreation Plan to be developedBy Latrobe City Council - 27th July 2005 - Back to News The development of a Recreation Plan for Traralgon’s sporting and recreation facilities will be undertaken following a $30,000 State Government grant provided through the Community Facilities Funding Program with matching funding from Latrobe City.
At the announcement of the State funding contribution by Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins MP, at the Traralgon Showgrounds on Wednesday, Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said the Plan will appraise all outdoor leisure facilities in Traralgon.
"The Recreation Plan will contain policies, strategies, actions and recommendations that will lead to timed implementation of active outdoor recreation facilities and services in Traralgon for the next 10 to 15 years," Cr Lougheed said.
"Traralgon has several large outdoor sporting areas, including the Showgrounds, Traralgon West sports complex and Glenview Park, as well as a number of smaller ovals or recreation areas. As part of this Recreation Plan, all these facilities will be reviewed in terms of their current and potential usage, location and catchment areas," Cr Lougheed explained.
"Council had been approached by a number of sporting clubs and organisations within the Traralgon district with a view to developing their grounds, competitions and sporting futures. By implementing the Recreation Plan, the policies we put in place will be based on investing the community’s resources in the appropriate facilities and structures," Cr Lougheed explained.
Latrobe City’s Recreation Planner, Ian Murphy, said that tenders for consultants to undertake the Recreation Plan will soon be advertised and their first task will be a process of community consultation.
"The consultation will include undertaking interviews with club members, residents and other interested parties in order to identify current and future requirements for sporting and recreational pursuits in Traralgon," Mr Murphy explained.
Cr Lougheed said the resulting Plan will ensure that there is adequate provision of resources to provide for ongoing maintenance, upgrading and development of recreational facilities as well as ensuring that there is an adequate supply of land to meet the recreational needs of the Traralgon and the wider Latrobe community over the next decade or so.
"We will look for as much community cooperation and consultation as possible in order to identify what the people of Latrobe City really want from their outdoor recreation reserves," Cr Lougheed said.
"We are dedicated to providing a diverse range of outdoor recreation facilities and services to encourage participation both by user groups and the wider community.
"The development of the Traralgon Recreation Plan is intended to be the precursor to a City-wide review," Cr Lougheed added.
