The fire that was started on Friday morning in the Alpine National Park, north of the Snowy Ranges airstrip has been brought under control by DSE firefighters over the weekend.

By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 22nd March 2004 - Back to News

Over 50 personnel, four tankers, five slip-on units, one dozer and four aircraft were used to fight this fire, diverting valuable resources from the Department's planned burning operations in the region.

Incident Controller, Laurie Jeremiah said that the use of aircraft was opportune and effective in preventing the fire from moving into the gorge country.

"We've been able to keep this fire small and protect the conservation areas of the National Park," Mr Jeremiah said.

"The large fuel reduction burn that we had planned for Mount Angus, north of Valencia Creek on Saturday did not go ahead due to having to concentrate our resources on the wildfire."

"By Sunday, the fuel moisture content was too dry to proceed safely, so this burn will be postponed until the prescriptions are suitable to conduct the burn safely and effectively."
