Caldwells Bridge To Reopen In Late AugustCaldwells Bridge over Traralgon Creek on the Traralgon Creek Road near Balook, will reopen to traffic in late August following extensive refurbishment and replacement of its ageing timber deck with a concrete structure. By Latrobe City Council - 2nd August 2007 - Back to News Latrobe City councillor, Cr Doug Caulfield, said contractors recently poured the new concrete deck which will require approximately four weeks to cure.
"The reopening will be welcomed by Grand Ridge Plantations for its logging operations. However, Traralgon Creek Road, where Caldwells Bridge is located, is also an alternative route used by visitors to the Tarra Valley and Bulga National Parks; and as such, many locals together with those involved in local tourism will benefit from the reopening," Cr Caulfield said.
Latrobe City’s maintenance engineer, Jey Vyravipillai, explained that during periodic inspections of bridges on Traralgon Creek Road, it was identified that the low level Caldwells Bridge near Balook required extensive repair works on the timber deck in order to ensure the structural safety and stability.
"To improve the safety and comfort of the road users, the replacement of the timber deck was prioritised, and the $110,000 funded in council’s 2006/2007 budget. Following the completion of the designs and the tender process, the contract for the replacement of the timber deck was awarded.
"The reconstruction works on the bridge commenced in late March 2007 with the temporary closure of Traralgon Creek Road at the bridge. Progress on the reconstruction works was hindered due to substantial flooding in the area during June and the inability to access the site. However, rapid progress was made once conditions permitted," Mr Vyravipillai explained.
"The concrete deck on the bridge has now been completed and the bridge is expected to be reopened to traffic by the end of August 2007, when the concrete attains its maximum strength."
Refurbishment of Caldwells Bridge has been undertaken by to D N McInness Pty Ltd.
