Care Needed With FirebreaksAs we approach summer you may be looking at cultivating strips around your farm for firebreaks. By Department of Primary Industries - 14th November 2005 - Back to News It is important to keep firebreaks inside your property. Destroying native plants on crown land and grazing, cropping or mowing on road frontages without a permit from your local council and/or DSE is illegal.
There is only one per cent of native grasslands left in Victoria and a lot of these grasslands are found on roadsides and in road reserves. Grasslands provide important habitat for many animals and can also be an important refuge for predators that consume insect pests on farms.
For these considerations firebreaks need to be planned carefully. For more information contact either your local DSE office, the DPI/DSE Customer Service Centre on 136 186 or the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.
