Sustainable Sporting Ground Grants Now Available Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe has encouraged local sports clubs looking to weather-proof their facilities to approach Latrobe City Council about applying for a share in $2 million worth of By Russell Northe - 11th July 2011 - Back to News Victorian Government funding, now available through the latest round of the Sustainable Sports Ground Program. Mr Northe said the grants would provide extra support to help clubs deal with the impacts of climate extremes. "In recent years regional and country clubs have been doing it tough, with facilities battling to cope with climate extremes, including drought and floods," Mr Northe said. "This program provides the cash boost needed for sports clubs to develop long term, sustainable, low water use community sporting facilities that are better equipped to deal with future climate challenges. "From water recycling and storm water harvesting to drought resistant turf and the installation of synthetic playing surfaces for sports such as soccer, hockey, lawn bowls and tennis, the Sustainable Sports Ground Program helps local sport to not only survive, but to thrive. "By helping communities to improve the quality, water efficiency and sustainability of local facilities, the program also encourages even greater participation at local clubs. "More people will be able to enjoy the health benefits of getting more active, more often and clubs can cater for more members all year round." Mr Northe said the Victorian Government was proud to invest in the sustainability of local sporting facilities. "By working together with local clubs via councils we can support higher levels of use and participation at local sporting facilities, whatever the weather brings," Mr Northe said. "If you are part of a local club looking to better protect your facility from the effects of weather extremes please contact Latrobe City Council, develop a proposal and have them apply for the funding on your behalf," Mr Northe said. Up to $100,000 is available for each project. Applications close Wednesday 10 August 2011.
