Tree Warning To Residents

Residents are being warned to be on the look out for tree contractors who knock on their doors offering to fix dangerous trees.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 7th June 2007 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council has received reports that the groups have been targeting elderly homeowners across Melbourne, including outlying areas such as Frankston.

Council’s Infrastructure Maintenance Manager, Fred Huitema said the contractors are securing jobs under false pretences.

"These people approach residents and tell them certain trees in their garden pose a safety risk," said Mr Huitema.

"They can be very persuasive and they usually target older people, sometimes even driving them to the bank to get payment for the job.

"There are a number of groups operating this scam, usually over a weekend," continued Mr Huitema.

"People are paying good money for services that really are not necessary."

Mr Huitema confirmed that there was also a concern about theft from residents.

"In scams such as this, they will often ask to come inside and use the toilet, which is an excuse to see what items are worth stealing," warned Mr Huitema.

"I encourage anyone who is approached by these people not to let them inside their houses.

"If you are approached, I recommend contacting the Police," Mr Huitema said.
