Wonthaggi Centennial Centre Set Back

Bass Coast Shire Council has been advised by the Australian Government that their funding application for the Wonthaggi Centennial Centre was not successful.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 12th June 2009 - Back to News

Council applied for just over $2 million in funding to build the Centre in Fincher Street Rotary Park under the Federal Government’s Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (RLCIP).

Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, said the government advised that the program had received an enormous amount of funding applications.

"There were more than 480 applications, which asked for over $2 billion in funding," explained Mr Bawden.

"There was only $550 million available so many very worthy applications did not receive funding. Unfortunately, our project was one of these.

"The Centennial Centre project was always reliant on securing significant government funding," Mr Bawden said.

"We will be looking at what other funding options are available to us, as well as reviewing the current plan, to make sure that it is the best use of funds."

"We have asked for feedback on why our application was unsuccessful so we can use this information to help us with further funding opportunities.

"Council will also be speaking with Rotary to discuss future options."

The proposed 2009/10 budget had allocated $123,500 towards the project based on securing federal funding. This money will now be used to help progress the project and investigate alternative funding options.
