Freedom of the City March – 18 June

Continuing a long-established military tradition, on Friday 18 June the RAAF Base East Sale will conduct a Freedom of the City march* through the centre of Sale involving some 200 personnel and a military band – all in full ceremonial uniform.

By Wellington Shire Council - 7th June 2004 - Back to News

Everyone is invited to line the route and cheer on the parade, which is proudly supported by Wellington Shire Council and celebrates the strong, invaluable relationship that exists between the local base and the community.

The 20 minute march - which will be carried out with military precision and incorporate a flypast by HS 748 aircraft of 32 squadron and the RAAF Roulettes - will start from Brennan Park in Stawell Street at 11am. It will continue south along Raymond Street and on into Punt Lane, where the parade will finish at the Gippsland Armed Forces Museum.

As part of the proceedings the parade will be formally ‘challenged’ as it arrives at the entry to the pedestrian Mall (close to the Crown Hotel). The marchers will go on to give a salute to the citizens of the city (outside the Commonwealth Bank in Raymond Street), including assembled dignitaries –amongst them Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos.

The last time this ceremony was conducted was in 1998.

Said Mayor Jeff Amos: "This is a significant occasion which provides a great opportunity for the Sale and shire community to publicly express their appreciation and thanks to all those involved with the RAAF Base.

"It acknowledges the very important part the base plays in the cultural and economic life of Wellington and is particularly special this year given the Federal Government’s confirmation that it will be expanding the facility."
