Jet Skis Under Review

The State Government will be examining the use of jet skis as part of a review of the Marine Safety Act.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 25th June 2009 - Back to News

During his recent visit to Bass Coast, Minister Tim Pallas discussed the issue with representatives from Bass Coast Shire Council.

Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, said that as Minister for Roads and Ports, Mininster Pallas, is responsible for the review of the Marine Safety Act.

"The Minister assured us that the government was very keen to make sure that anyone operating a boat or a personal water craft (PWC) behaves responsibly," explained Mr Bawden.

"He said that similar measures to the hoon legislation currently in place for cars could be introduced for water craft. The review will definitely be looking at the licensing requirements for anyone operating a vehicle on the water and this includes jet skis."

Mr Bawden said that it was very important to be considerate of other people using the water.

"Over summer, we have so many swimmers, surfers, jet skis and boats using our beaches, it is very important that people behave responsibly," Mr Bawden said.

"Currently, a jet ski is subject to the same regulations as a powerboat. They must stay under 5 knots, which is the equivalent to walking pace, when they are within 50 metres of swimmers and 200 metres of the water’s edge.

"Every summer, Council receives quite a few calls from residents who are concerned about jet skiers and their proximity to swimmers, particularly at our popular family beaches.

"We would certainly welcome any initiatives that provided clear guidelines for use of PWCs and enforcement measures."
