School’s Back after Summer

School Zone speed limits are also back in effect

Students are back to school this week for their first term of the year, so Bass Coast Shire Council is reminding community members and parents that School Zone speed limits are also back in effect.

Drivers are reminded that when approaching school crossings, they should slow down to 40 km/h or less, watch for children and remember not to stop too close to the crossing.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari, asked parents to be mindful of parking rules during drop off and pick up times.

"Sometimes it can be tempting to double park for a moment, or sneak into a bus zone or no standing zone, but it’s always better to find a safer park further away and enjoy the short walk," Cr Tessari said.

School crossings must be completely vacated of all pedestrians, included the crossing supervisor, before driving through.

It’s also important to not park too close to the school crossings. Vehicles must not stop 20 metres before or 10 metres after a school crossing, which is generally defined by line markings or parking signage. Crossing supervisors need a clear field of vision in all directions around their crossing so they can spot approaching children and vehicles as soon as possible.

The warm, summer weather could also encourage more people to walk to and from school this term.

Council and Victoria Police will be monitoring school crossings and driver behaviour around schools in coming weeks, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times.

Reduced speed limits, school crossings and parking restrictions around schools are in place to improve the movements of traffic during peak times and maximise safety for children and all road users.

"We want to ensure the safety of children, pedestrians and motorists around our streets and schools," Cr Tessari said.

"You can help by obeying road rules and allowing enough time to drop off and pick up your child. You might also consider leaving the car at home or parking further away from school and walking with your child to reduce traffic congestion."

Please remember is an offence to:

• Double park by stopping next to a legally parked vehicle - even for a short time or to drop off or pick up passengers.
• Stop or park across a driveway, footpath or dividing strip except when picking up or dropping off passengers.
• Stop or park within 10 metres of an intersection
• Stop or park across or in a bus zone.
