Latrobe City’S Power Of Racing Celebrates Ten Years

This year sees the Power of Racing celebrate its tenth anniversary and the next twelve weeks will see a full calendar of exciting and vibrant events being held across Latrobe City.

The Power of Racing is an exciting carnival of activities based around the spring racing events in Latrobe and designed to attract visitors to the region. The carnival includes a variety of cross-code sporting and community events highlighting the diversity of sports and entertainment in Latrobe City.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the two partnering racing clubs - Moe Racing Club and Latrobe Valley Racing Club - have been great supporters over the past decade.

"The beauty of the Power of Racing celebration is that it incorporates not only horse racing but also many other community events and festivities from 1 October to 31 December. The collaborative approach creates a carnival atmosphere for spring with a positive, fresh feeling that the municipality is a great place to be during the longer days and warmer months of the year," Cr White explained.

Moe Racing Club Chief Executive Officer, David McKinnon, said that the club had recently signed Steeline Gippsland as the new major sponsor.

"We are looking forward to the first Steeline Gippsland Moe Cup Day on Thursday 13 October. We have already sold out all corporate areas which is a strong indication that we will see the usual 8,000 plus crowd turn out.

"We are excited to get the spring carnival underway as it is the start of a busy three months for the club. We also have races on Melbourne Cup Day with six on-course gallops plus Flemington on the big screen. We then host two midweek race days in November before the big STAR FM Twilight Christmas Race on Friday 16 December.

"The Christmas races last year were a huge success for the club and saw just as many people in marquees as we had on Moe Cup Day. We are preparing for another massive year and hope that local businesses can support us by coming to the club on one of these great days," Mr McKinnon said.

Latrobe Valley Racing Club, Chief Executive Officer, Brendan Blackshaw, said that they were delighted this year to have a third meeting to add to the cluster of events.

"For Caulfield Cup Day on Saturday 15 October, we will host a very casual day, aligning the event as a community or club type of day. Of course, our two existing days have strong themes already being Ladies Day on Derby Day (Saturday 29 October) and a Christmas theme at our Cup meeting on Sunday 11 December," Mr Blackshaw said.

Cr White urged residents to make the most of spring fever and attend the sporting or leisure events of their choice.

"Keep an eye out on our website and in the local media for details of events in the Power of Racing schedule. There is something for everyone and we encourage the community to get out and about in their own backyard to support the season," Cr White concluded.
