Colonoscopy Equipment Boost For Lrh

Latrobe Regional Hospital will be assisted to meet increasing demand for colonoscopy procedures with a $96,704 boost from the Victorian Coalition Government.

By Russell Northe - 27th July 2011 - Back to News

Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the funding for LRH was one of 18 Victorian hospitals to receive a share of $1.81 million for new colonoscopy equipment.

"These equipment grants are just one way in which the Coalition Government is working to ensure that Victorians have access to quality colonoscopy services in a timely manner," Mr Northe said.

"Through this funding, Latrobe Regional Hospital will now be able to purchase two colonoscopes, an endoscope reprocessor and ultrasonic cleaner.

"This funding will further develop their colonoscopy capacity and quality of service."

Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the additional colonoscopy funding would make it easier for locals to access the services they need. "People are more likely to undertake these types of tests if they don't have the burden of extensive travel and the costs that go with that," Mr Chester said. "The Federal Government’s National Bowel Screening Program has seen an increase in demand for colonoscopy procedures and this investment in new equipment will help to meet that demand. "Keeping our health services well equipped can also be a key in retaining and recruiting new specialists to the region."

Bowel cancer is the second most common cancer in Victoria, with about 3,600 new cases diagnosed every year and around 30 people dying from the disease each week.

Bowel cancer is one of the most curable types of cancer when it is detected early enough, as 90 per cent of bowel cancer in its early stages can be treated successfully if detected.
