Young library users welcome gift from Friends Young library users welcomed the gift of teenage audio tapes and CDs made by the Friends of Latrobe City Libraries at the Moe Library last week. By Latrobe City Council - 20th November 2003 - Back to News Moe Library Coordinator, Jeanette Moore, who accepted the gift on behalf of Latrobe City Council, said the donation was warmly welcomed by the large number of young people at the presentation.
Ms Moore said that the donation included titles such as Artemis Fowl, the story of a young boy genius who becomes a criminal mastermind.
"It is the first in a trilogy of internationally best-selling stories by Eoin Colfer, following the exploits of Artemis and his attempt to steal leprechaun technology by kidnapping Captain Holly Short," Ms Moore said.
"Another of the talking books is ‘Slaves of the Mastery’, the second in the Wind on Fire trilogy by William Nicholson.
"We have also been given a copy of ‘Where in the World’ by Simon French, a novel shortlisted for the Children’s Book Council, Book of the Year.
"One of the other taped titles donated is ‘Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta. This is the follow-up to ‘Looking for Alibrandi’ and is a memorable story told with humour, compassion and joy," Ms Moore said.
"All these books have great themes for the younger reader and we are very pleased to be able to offer them to teenage library users," Ms Moore added.
A number of young people immediately showed delight with the donated material by borrowing it from the library. Lowanna student, Lucy, said she had selected ‘Finding Francesca’ and ‘Young Digger’ a story of a young French orphan ‘adopted’ by airmen at the end of World War I.
Chair of the Friends of Latrobe City Libraries, John Lawson, said the Friends group acted as a communication link between library users and Council. "One of our roles is to identify the types of resources library users would like to see on the shelf, and facilitate ways of obtaining these resources," Mr Lawson explained.
"The Friends groups are always eager to receive suggestions and there is a suggestion box located at each library. The gift of the teenage audio items was suggested by a young patron through the suggestion box as a way of using revenue from book sales conducted by the Friends group," Mr Lawson said.
The Friends of the Library meet on a monthly basis on every fourth Wednesday at 7pm in the Library Meeting rooms. For more information on the Friends of the Library or the presentation contact Jill Beck on 5174 1005.
