Boosting youth representation

Wellington Shire Council is launching a far-reaching new initiative designed to boost the representation of local young people in council policy and decisions.

By Wellington Shire Council - 21st April 2004 - Back to News

The Youth District Advisory Network (YDAN) program is a young people’s version of the council’s District Advisory Network and will give youths an opportunity to share their opinions, discuss local youth and community issues and act as an advisory group to the Wellington Youth Strategy.

The YDANs will each comprise at least five members and act as a feeder to the new Wellington Shire Youth Council (WSYC), with two elected representatives from each YDAN group being appointed to WSYC, which will meet quarterly.

YDANs will be created in seven areas across Wellington - Heyfield, Sale, Coastal, Maffra, Stratford, Rosedale and Yarram - and are designed to allow for shire-wide representation and the development of localised action plans.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "The new youth council and Youth DANs programs are a welcome addition to the already successful and invaluable DANs network and will increase our young residents’ representation in council matters.

"It will serve as a forum that will enable our young residents to share their views and suggestions with the broader community and allow the council to assist in delivering what it really is that our young people want."

More information, information kits and nomination forms are available by telephoning Wellington’s Youth Development Officer, David Roberts on 1300 366 244 or visiting www.wellington.vic.gov.au.
