Traralgon Creek Committee visits catchmentsBy Latrobe City Council - 8th August 2005 - Back to News The Traralgon Creek Neighbourhood Environment Improvement Steering Committee has undertaken two field excursions over the past few weeks in order to help them develop a long term plan for the improvement of the health and amenity of the Traralgon Creek catchment.
Latrobe City’s Neighbourhood Environment Improvement Plan (NEIP) Officer, Mike Answerth, said that the Committee undertook the visits in order to gain a greater understanding of the land use along the Traralgon Creek.
"The Committee looked at the issues affecting the environment and quality of the waterway. They also took part in an extensive tour of the catchment where they viewed the forestry activities, the power industry’s interaction, farming, willow removal, urban activities and improvements that have already been put in place," Mr Answerth explained.
Mr Answerth said that the group was accompanied by representatives of the EPA, Department of Sustainability and the Environment, Grand Ridge Plantations, Loy Yang Power, International Power-Mitsui, and the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority to provide expert input at various stages of the tour.
"The Committee also travelled to the Powlett River area in South
Gippsland to view revegetation works carried out by Landcare groups in conjunction with corporate partners International Power Loy Yang B (formerly Edison Mission).
"The group was particularly impressed by some of the native revegetation projects on farms in the Loch-Kilcunda area, with the support of the power company and local government," Mr Answerth added.
The Traralgon Creek NEIP is being developed in partnership with all parts of the community including residents, special interest groups, local government, local industry, West Gippsland Catchment Authority and other government agencies such as EPA and the Department of Sustainability and Environment.
The objectives and proposals of the plan will be available for public comment during the consultative process of developing the final long term plan.
