New Facilities At Wonthaggi Reserve

The Agricultural Show society, sporting groups and other users are now enjoying improved facilities at the Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve.

By Bass Coast - 2nd November 2011 - Back to News

The new building near the skate park and netball courts replaced the ageing red brick facility and provides new toilets, change rooms and multipurpose rooms.

Ella Angarane, Bass Coast Shire Council’s Recreation and Leisure Planner, explained that the new amenities block was built onto the existing score board.

"This reduces the number of structures on the reserve but still provides an accessible unisex toilet with baby change facilities, male and female toilets," said Ms Angarane.

"There is also a muiltipurpose room that will be used as a first aid room on show days and regularly by Bass Coast YMCA. "The design of the building includes energy efficient features such as skylights and low flow toilet cisterns.

"The new facilities increase accessibility and benefit users of the Reserve such as the sporting clubs, and those attending annual events such as the Show and the Human Powered vehicles event," said Ms Angarane.

The $180,000 project went ahead thanks to the Wonthaggi and District Agricultural Show Society who successfully obtained a $50,000 grant from Victorian Agricultural Shows Ltd and Regional Development Victoria.

The Wonthaggi and District Agricultural Show Society Secretary, Rosemary Loughnan describes the old toilet block as "past its day and unreliable for big events".

"The Show Society Committee was very happy to be able to work together with Council to build this wonderful new facility.
"The benefits however will go far beyond our 3,000 show visitors and include the Sporting Clubs, the Human Powered Vehicle participants and other users of the reserve", said Ms Loughnan.
