Join in Australia Day celebrations!

Wellington Shire Council is committing over $6,000 to support community-led celebrations being held around the shire to mark Australia Day on 26 January – with everyone invited to join in on the occasion.

By Wellington Shire Council - 13th January 2005 - Back to News

Flag-raising ceremonies, sing-a-longs, live entertainment and BBQs will entertain the crowds across Wellington during the day as Australians recognise their achievements as a nation.

The occasion will also see the council announce the winners of its annual Australia Day Awards, acknowledging the outstanding service and contributions provided by local individuals and community-focused organisations. Awards will be presented for; Australia Day Citizen of the Year; Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year; Community Event of the Year; and Community Group of the Year.

In addition Wellington’s newest residents will be sworn in as Australian citizens at a citizenship ceremony to be conducted by Wellington’s Mayor, Cr. Peter Gault.

This year the organising committee of the Sale Australia Day event has taken the opportunity to incorporate a family fun day and concert, as a fundraising appeal for the victims of the recent tsunami. The council is pleased to support this move and wishes it every success.

Said Wellington Mayor Peter Gault: "This day is a significant date on the Australian calendar which gives us the chance to celebrate and reflect on what it means to be an Australian, and what we’ve achieved as a nation. I strongly encourage everyone to attend one of the very worthwhile Australia Day events being held in a town near you.

"Our thanks and appreciation is extended to the community groups and individuals around the shire who have supported this significant day by organising events for others to enjoy. It truly represents what Australia Day is all about."

A complete list of events being held across the shire can be found on the council’s website at www.wellington.vic.gov.au and details are also available by telephoning 1300 366 244. In addition, anyone who is holding an Australia Day celebration within Wellington is welcome to contact the council to have their event included on the website. m/f
