Boardwalk Construction To Begin In FebruaryWork on the Metung Boardwalk is expected to begin next February, according to East Gippsland Shire Council. By East Gippsland Shire - 14th November 2005 - Back to News CEO Steve Kozlowski said that Council had hoped that part of the project would have been completed in time for the holiday season, with the balance being completed afterwards.
"The contractor who won the tender had acquired so much additional work that he was unable to proceed with the job, so we then offered the opportunity to the next bidder," he said.
"But, because the council is in ‘caretaker’ mode we had to get approval from the Minister for Local Government and this has now been obtained.
"The decision means that the new contractor, local company Bury’s Slipway, can immediately acquire materials and conduct other preparations ahead of the start of construction work."
Mr Kozlowski said the company was well aware of the community’s wish that the boardwalk be completed as quickly as possible.
"Council is also keen to see the job finished because we know what an asset it will be to one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Gippsland Lakes," he said.
"As well as this it will also provide a great improvement in pedestrian safety."
