By Latrobe Valley Baseball Association - 12th June 2001 - Back to News The weekend of 26th & 27th May 2001 saw the Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association Under 14 Representative Team travel to Ballarat to contest the 2001 Victorian Provincial Championships.
The team performed above expectations winning four of their five round robin games only to miss out on a grand final playoff by 0.4%. Each player can be extremely proud of their achievements over the weekend.
Game one was a closely fought contest against Goulburn Valley. The team started strongly with the bat putting on four runs. Goulburn Valley quickly answered the challenge to take a narrow lead. Showing character beyond their years the Latrobe Valley team stayed close and snatched the lead late for an emphatic 16–14 win. Some good hitting and excellent pitching from Gareth Tebb led the comeback and he was aptly supported by Shannon Grass, Matthew McLean & Justin Cuthill.
The team went into the second game full of confidence as they faced the host team Ballarat. The boys played strongly from the start to record a 15–4 win in what proved to be an uneven contest. Matthew McLean pitched well to contain the Ballarat batters and Jack Stone batted strongly in a great team performance.
Game three saw us tackle the fancied Bendigo team. The game started very evenly with Bendigo eventually holding on to a 9-7 lead. Matthew McLean came on to pitch late in the game shutting down Bendigo’s bats allowing us time to bat again and post a well earned 11-9 victory. Best Players for Latrobe Valley were David Radovich, Matthew McLean, Tim Tobias and Scott Bailey.
Game Four turned out to be a battle for first place against a very strong Sunraysia outfit. Sunraysia took control from the start with strong pitching and good hitting to record a solid victory. The highlight for Latrobe Valley was a huge home run to Dale Robbins and along with Jack Stone and Ashley Estcourt they were the top performers. Sunraysia’s dominance would be seen in the final as they went on to comfortably win the championship.
The last game was against North East and was a must win game for a chance to play off in the final for the championship. The boys started slowly allowing North East to slip out to an 11–8 lead. Displaying maturity the team rallied with the bats late in the game to take a thrilling 12–11 win. Best Players were Dale Robbins, Matthew McLean, Gareth Tebb and Adam Taylor.
The final ladder had us missing out on the chance to play Sunraysia for the championship by less than one percent. We had to be content with a return battle with North East for third place. The disappointment of not making the final was evident as the team started slowly allowing North East to take a commanding lead. The boys finished strongly but left it too late to take the contest going down 16-11. Best players were Jack Stone, Matthew McLean & Dale Robbins.
The team played strongly throughout the championships showing a lot of character and composure, coming from behind to win late in the game on three occasions. Congratulations to Coach, Brad Pratt, Manager Noel Tobias and the six players selected in the Victorian Provincial Baseball League All Star team, Tim Tobias (2nd Base), Matthew McLean (3rd Base), Dale Robbins (Short Stop), David Radovich (Leftfield), Jack Stone (Centrefield) and Gareth Tebb (Rightfield). Special thanks to Andrea Tobias for scoring and Clyde Cumming for representing Latrobe Valley as our umpire and to the parents who traveled to Ballarat for their assistance and support.
The highlight of the weekend was the outstanding batting and base running of the Latrobe Valley side. This was evident by the fact they scored more than ten runs in five of the six games played. The solid fielding efforts were rewarded by the six "all star" selections. Each of the "all star" players now has the opportunity to play against an Australian under 12 team later in the year. They are also invited to try out for selection in the Victorian Provincial Under 14 team. To achieve six selections in a nine player "all star" team is an amazing achievement for our association.
The team was proudly represented by Ben Madex, David Radovich, Gareth Tebb (Churchill), Lee Armstrong, Tim Tobias (Moe/Newborough), Scott Bailey, Justin Cuthill, Gil Daniel, Dale Robbins, Adam Taylor (Sale), Ashley Estcourt, Shannon Grass, Matthew McLean (Traralgon) and Jack Stone (Yarram).
The Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association resumes this Sunday with round nine games. Morwell hosts Sale, Moe/Newborough battles Yarram and the Churchill Braves take on the Traralgon Redsox. So come down to the grounds for a taste of the best baseball action the Latrobe Valley has to offer.
