Bass Coast Shire Council has set up a register of activities to help the recovery effort for the Victorian bushfires.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 25th February 2009 - Back to News

Individuals and groups can access the register from Council’s website and post details of relief events and activities.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr John Duscher, said every community organisation in Council’s community directory had been notified of the register.

"Emails were sent out this week to all our contacts, inviting them to put their details up on the website," explained Cr Duscher.

"I met with a number of groups at the community forum in Wonthaggi on Monday to talk about how we could best coordinate our efforts.

"We hope that the register will link groups or individuals interested in hosting similar events and activities," continued Cr Duscher.

"It will also help with scheduling, as people will be able to see when other events are happening."

The register will include a list of work being undertaken by community groups and local businesses are able to register any initiative they are undertaking to help with the relief efforts.

"Businesses can put up the details of any sales initiatives they might have, where a percentage of profits will be directed to the relief effort," said Cr Duscher.

"Or perhaps they have collection tins in their stores, where people can make donations. We want businesses to put up all these details, so that anyone wanting to help with the bushfire relief can take advantage of what is on offer."

The register can be accessed from Council’s website.

"If you log onto our website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au, you will see a red square at the top right of the screen, marked "Bushfire relief"," explained Cr Duscher.

"Just click in that square and you will go straight to the register. You can then enter your details.

"Any organisation that does not have internet access can send details of your event or activities to Council and we can add them to the register.

"Please call Amalee Stivic or Sharon Fowles on 1300 BCOAST (226 278)."

The site for the register was sent up by Council’s IT department and Google. It includes a Google map of bushfire activities and links to sites with relevant bushfire information. The register can be directly accessed at http://bushfirerelief.basscoast.vic.gov.au/.
