Last week, Latrobe City Council joined the community in celebrating Reconciliation Week. Reconciliation Week is a time for Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The 2023 Reconciliation Week theme "Be a Voice for Generations" encouraged all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives.

Mayor of Latrobe City, Councillor Kellie O'Callaghan said we all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part as we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's histories, cultures, and futures. "Council is committed to ongoing partnerships with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and values our partnership and collaborative work with the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC)."

"Reconciliation is about building a better nation; a more united Australia that respects and takes pride in 65,000 years of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, an Australia that stands opposed to racism, inequity and injustice. I urge all Latrobe City residents to think about how they can contribute to reconciliation not just during reconciliation week, but all year round," said the Mayor.

To celebrate Reconciliation Week, council held a flag raising ceremony on Monday 29 May, outside Latrobe City Council Headquarters in Morwell. This was followed by a free community morning tea in the Nambur Wariga meeting room.
