Community Debate - Star Wars II, Attack Of The Clones The debating team prepares for battle What do Star Wars II and two teams of top debaters have in common? Find out! By Carol McCormack - 10th June 2002 - Back to News What do Star Wars II and two teams of top debaters have in common? They will both feature at an evening of entertainment on Monday 24 June from 6:15pm at the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre.
"It will be a fantastically fun and inexpensive evening for the whole family," said Jan Bourne, Community Development Officer with Council. "For only a gold coin donation people will hear two fantastic debates and then see the latest Star Wars film."
Popular local entertainer Leigh Sullivan will perform during the evening, as well as hosting the two very contentious debates.
Two debate team from Newhaven Secondary College will argue that "Young people’s use of drugs and alcohol is legitimised through popular culture."
"The youth teams have been rigorously preparing for the debate, so it should be fantastic," said Jan.
"The adult teams are a diverse bunch with people like Richard Schmeiszal from the Sentinel Times and Jamie Hogan from Bass Coast Youth Services," said Jan. "They are already getting extremely competitive over the very contentious topic that alcohol should be banned."
Jane Ross from the Great Southern Star Newspaper and Cr Miranda Sage from Bass Coast Shire Council will adjudicate the debates.
A special screening of George Lucas’ "Star Wars II – Attack of Clones" will round up a fantastic evening of entertainment.
"Come along, cheer for a team during the debates and then enjoy a fantastic film," said Jan. "Where else could you have such a great evening for only a couple of dollars.
The evening is part of Drug Action Week activities organised by Bass Coast Shire Council and Sand Remo and District Community Health Centre.
Earlier in the day there will be a drug and alcohol Expo at the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre. The Expo will include information and displays. Drug and alcohol workers will be available to answer questions. The Expo is free and will run from 2pm to 5pm.
"It is an opportunity for people of all ages to have fun while learning about drug and alcohol issues," said Jan.
