Beautification Project Transforms Yallourn NorthThe southern and main entrance to Yallourn North has received a major makeover with an extensive beautification project completed this week By Latrobe City - 20th September 2007 - Back to News with the planting of two huge beds of trees and shrubs including crepe myrtles provided by Latrobe City.
Latrobe City councillor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said that the project will transform the entrance into a significant greenbelt to welcome visitors to the town.
"Students from the primary school undertook the majority of the planting under the watchful eye of teachers, Landcare officers, Latrobe City staff and members of the Yallourn North Action Group. Lunch for the hungry students was provided by TRUenergy, who also contributed to the cost of the plants.
"The concept for the project was developed by the Yallourn North community itself through a series of meetings with council officers," Cr Lougheed explained.
Funding for the project was part of a $300,000 Exceptional Circumstances Grant made to Latrobe City last year through Regional Development Victoria. Latrobe was one of a number of municipalities throughout the state to receive this funding following the effects of the drought. The funding was required to be spent on infrastructure projects in small towns using local business to boost regional economies.
Local communities in Latrobe were able to identify the priority projects for each small town as a result of Community Opportunity Workshops which had been conducted through funding from the former Department of Victorian Communities now the Department of Planning and Community Development.
Cr Lougheed said that in the case of the Yallourn North community the beautification of the town entrance
was a major priority.
"This is evident by the widespread support it has received from a number of organisations.
"Partners in the tree planting project include Landcare, Yallourn North Action Group, Yallourn North Primary School and TRUenergy Yallourn," Cr Lougheed added.
Latrobe City Council Community Small Towns Facilitator, Lois Pratt said that she was delighted with the project.
"It is a fine example of the local community knowing what it wanted and going about finding the support to implement it," Ms Pratt said.
Spokesperson for Yallourn North Action Group, Margaret Gaulton, said that the contribution of all parties was greatly appreciated by the community.
"The school students enjoyed the planting day and are looking forward to the responsibility of ensuring that the gardens are well cared for and maintained. They have the knowledge that they have been involved in giving their home town a makeover that all the community can enjoy and quite justifiably feel very proud of the results," Ms Gaulton concluded.
