San Remo and Phillip Island will host the opening day of the eighth Tour of Gippsland, when more than 150 competitors from Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines take on the 490 km, nine stage tour.

The tour starts with a 40 km criterium around the streets of San Remo on Wednesday, 1 August.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said the event provides significant economic benefits to Bass Coast and the wider Gippsland region.

"Events such as this are not only a great spectacle for locals and visitors, they also generate economic benefits," said Mr Piasente.

"Around 300 people will be staying in Bass Coast for up to two nights and the criterium is expected to attract several hundred spectators to the centre of San Remo. San Remo Primary School students will complete two laps of the circuit with the riders on Wednesday as part of the warm up," continued Mr Piasente.

The San Remo criterium kicks off at 11.00am in Marine Parade between Wynne Avenue and Bergin Grove. It will involve 20 laps of a circuit around Bergin Grove, Ocean Grove, Davis Point and Back Beach Roads.

The second stage of the Tour is a road race at the Grand Prix Circuit starting at 2.00pm.

"Spectators are welcome to come and watch the riders complete 15 laps of the 4.45km circuit," said Mr Piasente.
SBS Television films the event and screens a documentary of the Tour on its Cycling Central program which is due to screen on Sunday, 12 August 2012. Check your local guide for details.

Street Closures and Traffic
Event organisers will make every effort to minimise the impact to traffic and the community. Traffic marshals will control all intersections and approaches to the criterium circuit. Mr Piasente appealed to residents and motorists observe road closures and changed traffic conditions in San Remo during, before and after the event.

"We also ask people to be patient on the roads and obey the directions of traffic marshals and police," said Mr Piasente.
Properties affected by the street closures will receive a letter to advise them of the changed conditions.

Closures in San Remo – Wednesday, 1 August
Marine Parade will be closed approximately 50 metres each side of Edgar Road between 9.00am and 12.30 pm.

The Criterium Circuit - Marine Parade, Bergin Grove, Ocean Grove, Davis Point Road and Back Beach Road will be closed to traffic between 10.30am and midday. Cars cannot be parked on these streets during these times.
