Council To Fight On For Phillip Island Medical FacilityA proposal to provide an integrated medical care facility on Phillip Island has failed to secure support from the Federal Government. By Bass Coast - 22nd May 2012 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, said the facility would have improved Phillip Island residents’ access to health services.
"Council supported Bass Coast Community Health Service in their application for funding for an Integrated Primary Care Centre in Cowes. We are very disappointed that the proposal has not been supported. The establishment of such a facility was identified in the South Coast Area Based Service Plan."
The South Coast Area Based Service Plan was commissioned by the State government Department of Health, but the findings were not made public. In 2011, under a Freedom of Information request, Council received a copy of the plan, which identified improvements to health services through a Primary Care Centre in Cowes and the expansion or redevelopment of the Wonthaggi Hospital as a sub regional facility.
"Council’s role is to support our community and health service providers to improve health services," said Mr Bawden.
"We will continue to work with Bass Coast Community Health and other local agencies to identify appropriate sites on Phillip Island for the establishment of an Integrated Primary Care Centre. Council clearly recognises the need in our community for improved health services. Although Council is not a health service provider we do provide a range of preventative health services such as home and community care and immunisation services.
"We will continue to advocate and lobby State and Federal governments for improvements to our health services."
An Integrated Primary Care Centre could provide primary medical services such as General Practice; urgent care: nursing and allied health including chronic disease management; renal dialysis; community dental; pharmacy; medical imaging and specialist consulting rooms.
