Cultural Tourism Representatives meet at ARCAn informal meeting of Cultural Tourism representatives was held at ARC Yinnar recently. By Latrobe City Council - 21st July 2003 - Back to News The purpose of the meeting was to update participants on the progress of the Creative Gippsland Cultural Tourism Maps and to announce forthcoming workshops for those businesses or arts groups wishing to be included on the maps.
Latrobe City’s Manager Arts, Paul Holton said that the concept of Cultural Tourism was to bring together artists, arts organisations, and tourism operators to gain knowledge of each others’ businesses and use that knowledge to engage in promotions of mutual benefit.
"We are aiming to promote arts and culture to tourists and local visitors, so that anyone with an interest in art galleries, musical events or festivals, or visual arts such as sculpture, can identify the attractions and sites they may wish to visit together with other tourism draw-cards," Mr Holton said.
"This first meeting attracted representatives from the arts and tourism sectors, such as gallery owners, artists and representatives from the hospitality industry. They travelled from central and south Gippsland," Mr Holton explained.
Latrobe City Arts Innovation Facilitator, Lynette Raven, provided the group with details on the development of the Creative Gippsland Cultural Tourism maps which have been planned for six of the seven municipalities across Gippsland.
"The maps will highlight arts and cultural venues, festivals, and events, along with galleries, public art sites and theatre companies. Being produced to a high quality glossy format, the suite of maps will link with each other in a similar fashion to Tourism Victoria’s Jigsaw series," Ms Raven explained.
"The same map designer will be used for each municipality to ensure consistency. Once all the maps are available, visitors will have easy access to a wealth of significant cultural and artistic tourism attractions within each region," Ms Raven said.
"Each municipality will be hosting a ‘Ready Set Go – Market Ready Workshop’ to assist with ideas on arts and culture-targeted marketing. The workshops will be appropriate for those with little or no marketing knowledge as well as those with established marketing plans," Ms Raven said.
Workshops will be run on the 18 and 25 August and 1 September from 9am to 12 noon at the Baw Baw Customer Service Centre in Trafalgar. For further information on these workshops and other venues, contact Lynette Raven on 1300 367 700.
The next informal gathering of the Cultural Tourism network is to be held at the West Gippsland Art Centre in Warragul in September. For further information phone Cherie Howe on 5624 2407.
