Local Events Highlight Of Festival

Now in its 29th year, the Victorian Seniors Festival, from 3 to 10 October, includes more than 1,000 free and low-cost events across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Melbourne Metro and Regional Events Programs are available at Council’s Customer Service Centres, Coles supermarkets and Visitor Information Centres.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community Strengthening Manager, Antoinette Mitchell, said seniors heading to Melbourne would find a range of activities to keep them busy.

"Victoria’s transport providers are again supporting the week-long celebrations and all Victorian Seniors Card holders will travel free on the metropolitan public transport network and all regional town bus services from 3 to 10 October," said Ms Mitchell.

"Seniors in country Victoria can take advantage of free travel on V/Line rail and coach services on 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 October.

"With support from the Department of Planning and Community Development – Office of Senior Victorians, Council is proud to present the 2010 Victorian Seniors Festival in our local community.

"Now is the time to be inspired, and participate in the celebration of all Victorian Seniors," continued Ms Mitchell

There is a range of events being organised by local groups across Bass Coast Shire. These include:

  • The Wonthaggi Golf Club is proud to be a part of the 2010 Veterans Golf Classic and is hosting their events on Thursday, 7 October at 11.00am and Friday 8 October at 9.00am. Enjoy great golf, at great prices and you could win some great prizes! The 2010 Veterans Golf Classic is 23 days of social competitive golf which runs from 30 September through to 29 October. Entries close 30 September 2010. Contact Don Burke on 5672 2660 (deburke1@gotalk.net.au) for information and entry forms.
  • A free concert is being held at Korumburra Recreation Centre on Friday, 8 October 2010. Wendy Stapleton will be performing. Council has organised free coach transport to the event with pick-up points at V/line bus stops along the way. For your free tickets, please contact Linda Ryan on 1300 BCOAST (266 278). Tickets will be allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis. The concert commences at 1.00pm and includes afternoon tea. Arrival time at the Centre is noon to allow for a BYO lunch before the concert begins. Further details will be provided upon registration.
  • The Phillip Island RSL is hosting activities to celebrate the 2010 Victorian Seniors Festival. They include free and low-cost events such Morning Melodies on Tuesday, 5 October and a demonstration of cooking for one or two by the RSL’s Executive Chef, James Gross, on Friday, 8 October. The RSL is also offering a great lunch special Monday to Friday during the Festival which includes a choice of roast of the day or fish, chips and salad with complimentary beer, wine or soft drink, $1 Mystery Bet and entry into the Hamper Draw.   • Council is hosting a free Seniors’ Forum, Helping You to Remain Active and Independent, on Thursday, 7 October, at the Civic Centre Council Chambers, Wonthaggi. This is a hands-on session with fully qualified Occupational Therapists to answer all your questions and provide information on available services, eligibility and referrals. There will be a selection of aids available to look at and try out. Free morning tea is from 10.00am and the forum begins at 10.30am. To RSVP by 1 October, call Kylie Pryor on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).

· What not try a new way of getting fit while having a lot of fun with an Over 55’s Zumba class? This is a gentler Zumba class aimed at over 55's or those who haven't exercised in a long time. You still learn the same dances and steps but there's a bit more explanation and a bit less huffing and puffing! Zumba is on at 9.00am on Saturday, 9 October at the Inverloch Community Hub with a cost of $10. Call Miss JoJo on 0433 767 987 for further information.

· The Bass coast YMCA is presenting, Don’t fall for it – falls can be prevented. The active half hour session aims to improve balance and those core muscles (please dress appropriately) and is followed by an information discussion on a guide to preventing falls. There will be practical handouts to take home on this topic. You are welcome to stay on for a snack. This will be held on Friday, 8 October at 11.30am in the Phillip Island Leisure Centre and is free. Call the YMCA on 5952 2811 for further information

  • Join the YMCA’s team of Living Longer Living Stronger members in the gym for some fun and fitness. Discover the benefits of strength-based training, with their friendly and caring staff. This free session starts at 8.00am at the Wonthaggi Aquatic and Leisure Centre and is followed by a light breakfast at 8.45am. Call the YMCA on 5952-2811 for more information.
  • The Warrawee Senior Citizens’ Club has organised a sausage sizzle including salads and sweets on Monday, 4 October from noon. This will be followed with afternoon entertainment by Len Tosh, vocalist and guitarist. Cost is $2.00. Please RSVP to Marjorie on 5672 3667.
  • The Wonthaggi Italian Senior Citizens’ Club is hosting a celebratory barbecue on Thursday, 7 October from 12.30pm. This afternoon of food and fun is free. Please RSVP to Lena on 5672 2942 for catering purposes.
