18th Walk Safely to School Day

Friday 19 May is the 18th National Walk Safely to School Day.

Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath has joined the organisers in encouraging primary school children to walk to school this Friday.

"Now in its 18th year, Walk Safely to School Day is a great initiative raising awareness of a number of important issues," Ms Bath said.

"The promotion of Walk Safely to School Day helps to remind everyone to be more aware of all pedestrians, not only children."

Ms Bath is also the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Country Schools.

"Pedestrian safety is especially important in country and regional areas, where often there aren’t proper footpaths."

"Walking to school isn’t always an option for families living in country areas, so if you normally drive your children to school, consider parking some distance from the school instead and walking the rest."

"Walk Safely to School Day also reminds parents and carers that children, especially those under 10 years of age, should always be supervised in all road environments."

National Walk Safely to School Day promotes road safety, health, public transport and the environment.

"Another part of the message is reminding us all of the importance of eating a healthy breakfast to start your day."
