Early Childhood Centre For Wonthaggi

Bass Coast Shire Council, Billson Street Primary School, Wonthaggi Kindergarten and other stakeholders are working together to develop an Early Childhood Centre on the Primary School site.

By news@gippsland - 4th July 2005 - Back to News

Two open meetings are being held with the architects on Thursday 7 July, to give the community an opportunity to be involved in the design.

Council’s Community Services Manager, Sally Paech, said the Centre would provide a new location for the existing kinder on Murray Street, a childcare centre and meeting and consulting rooms for early childhood specialists.

"In order to apply for a very recent grant opportunity from the Department of Human Services, the facility needs to be designed to a detailed level by July 22nd.

"Therefore, there is a lot of work to do in a very short time frame.

"These meetings will be very important in ensuring the facility meets community needs," she said.

The stakeholders have also applied for a grant from the Department of Education for 50 percent of the project cost and are waiting on the outcome, which should be revealed within the next month.

Ms Paech says the Centre will provide a wide range of benefits to stakeholders and the community.

"The Murray Street Kindergarten will relocate to land on the Billson Street Primary School site, on the corner between King and Drysdale Streets, and benefit from a new, purpose built building.

"While the community will benefit from a having range of children’s services at the same location. This will include child care and specialist children’s services.

"Community groups will also be able to access the facility for such things as community meetings and training.

The need for the new kinder site arose out of Council’s 2004 Childcare Needs Analysis, with the Primary School one of the recommended sites.

Ms Paech says the project is also in line with actions set out in the recently developed Bass Coast Municipal Early Years Plan.

The two consultation meetings with the architects will be held at 1.00pm and 6.00pm at the Bass Coast Shire Council Chambers on McBride Ave. Community members and stakeholders may attend either session.
