Lake Guthridge scores $75,000 for irrigation initiative

Wellington Shire Council has been successful in securing a $75,000 grant from the Victorian Government for a state-of-the-art sustainable irrigation initiative at Lake Guthridge, Sale.

By Wellington Shire Council - 30th May 2005 - Back to News

The welcome grant comes from the Victorian Government’s $10 million Stormwater and Urban Conservation Fund and will enable construction of a new environmentally sustainable irrigation system to service popular sport and recreation areas in the city including Stephenson Park – Sale’s premier multi-use sporting area, Rotary Reserve and Sale Botanic Gardens.

It is estimated the total project will cost $150,000, with the council providing the remaining $75,000.

A new pumping station will be constructed to draw water from Lake Guthridge and distribute it directly to the Sale Fauna Park and Botanical Gardens via a network of sprinklers. Existing systems currently servicing Stephensons Park and Rotary Reserve will be disconnected and merged into the new Lake Guthridge pump. Sale’s baseball field, also located at the reserve, will benefit from a new additional irrigation system.

This project will carry a string of benefits including:

  • a sustainable substitution for the estimated 45 megalitres used annually;
  • a decrease in stormwater discharge to the Gippsland Lakes system;
  • improved irrigation efficiency;
  • significant annual water savings; and
  • safer playing surfaces for the community.

Work will commence on the project early the 2005-06 financial year with completion expected by November.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "The three locations targeted with this innovative project are extremely well-utilised sport and recreation facilities in our shire. We welcome this financial contribution from the Victorian Government which will bring many benefits to our community and our environment."
