"Christmas Is The Time For Giving," Says Council

Bass Coast Shire Council is asking the community to help disadvantaged families in Bass Coast, by donating a present under its Christmas Giving Trees.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 12th November 2007 - Back to News

Presents left under the trees will be distributed across the Shire by The Combined Welfare Group.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, said the Giving Tree had been strongly supported by Council staff and the community in recent years.

"We will have trees in our Customer Service Centres in Cowes and Wonthaggi," said Cr Goodwin.

"We’re asking people to bring in their gifts before 7 December, so there is plenty of time for them to be distributed to families that need them.

Cr Goodwin said there was a particular need for presents for teenagers.

"There is always a shortage of presents or gift vouchers suitable for teenagers," said Cr Goodwin.

"But obviously, presents for family members of all ages are needed."

"We’re asking people to wrap their gifts, and to clearly mark who the gift would be appropriate for," Cr Goodwin continued.

"I’d also like to stress that this isn’t a call for second-hand goods. The gifts left under the tree need to be new presents."

Gifts left at Council’s Customer Service Centres will be collected on 7 December, for distribution by The Combined Welfare Group.

The Combined Welfare Group consists of representatives from the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, Bass Coast Regional Health Family Resource Centre and churches from Wonthaggi and Inverloch.

"The Combined Welfare Group is a great example of the community working together," said Cr Goodwin.

"By joining forces, the quality and quantity of Christmas fare and children’s gifts has far surpassed the previous efforts when the agencies worked individually.

"I encourage people to give generously and help make Christmas a special day for everyone in Bass Coast."
