Removal Of Dangerous Trees At Maryvale Reserve

Over the next two weeks Latrobe City Council officers will remove approximately 240 pine trees from the north and western boundaries of the Maryvale Reserve, Morwell.

By Latrobe City - 6th February 2012 - Back to News

The trees will be replaced during the winter replanting period in mid 2012.

Latrobe City manager infrastructure operations, Jody O’Kane said that many of the trees were in poor health.

"Council’s arborists recently assessed the site and many of the pine trees failed the safety inspection. Many more of the trees are in poor condition as a result of being planted too closely together.

"The trees in their current condition pose a risk to the users of the reserve. Some of the trees have already dropped branches without warning and with public safety being our first priority clearly something has to be done," Mr O’Kane said.

Tanjil Ward Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that Latrobe City Council had been in contact with the groups who use the reserve regularly.

"We’ve spoken to the two main user groups who will be affected by the removal of the trees: the Latrobe Cricket Club and the Maltese Community Centre. Both groups understand the reasons why the pine trees have to be removed and have indicated their support for the removal and replacement program.

"A positive side of the removal of the dangerous trees is that the pulp wood from the removal of the trees will be recycled. The removal will also enable drainage works to be completed for the Morwell North West development to progress," Cr Lougheed concluded.

Removal of the pine trees will be carried out over a two week period; it is expected there will be minimal disruption to the use of the reserve.
