Latrobe prepares to celebrate International Youth Day

Latrobe City’s young people are preparing to celebrate their first United Nation’s International Youth Day on Thursday 12 August by selling fluorescent green ribbons to raise money for youth events in the local area.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 26th July 2004 - Back to News

Latrobe’s Youth Development Officer, Leanne Vella, said that the International Youth Day ribbons are a Youth Services initiative that celebrates young people and their contribution towards the local community.

"Young people in the local area embraced the idea of developing the fluorescent green ribbons, which symbolise vibrancy, passion and enthusiasm, and more than 60 young people are currently selling them throughout the municipality," Ms Vella said.

The theme for International Youth Day 2004 is ‘Youth in an Intergenerational Society’ and all events on the day will highlight the importance of solidarity between different generations in families, communities and nations.

"In the future, interdependence between younger and older generations will increase and therefore there is a need within youth development to understand and meet the growing care demands of older people within the local community," Ms Vella said.

"On International Youth Day, Latrobe will celebrate the contributions that young people make to the local community and will also run some events that will strengthen the relationship between the municipality’s older and younger citizens. A discussion session will be run so that Latrobe City residents, regardless of their age, can express their visions for the future, and a strong focus will also be given to the skills, interests and aspirations of young people.

"International Youth Day provides the local community with an opportunity to praise the achievements of young people in the local area and also to encourage their involvement in regional issues and events. This will be the first year that Latrobe celebrates International Youth Day and it is hoped that other councils within Gippsland will also take up the celebrations on an annual basis," Ms Vella concluded.
