Inquiry into Labor’s pet breeding laws

The Nationals are pleased that local dog breeders and animal lovers will be able to have their say through an inquiry that will investigate proposed new pet breeding laws.

Mr Northe said the Liberal-National Coalition was successful in establishing an inquiry into the Domestic Animals Amendment (Puppy Farms and Pet Shops) Bill 2016 in Parliament this week.

"I have received numerous emails, letters and phone calls to my office from many concerned local breeders, animal owners and businesses across the Morwell electorate who are extremely concerned at the impacts of the Labor Government’s proposed laws," Mr Northe said.

"The new inquiry to be conducted by the Legislative Council’s Economy and Infrastructure committee will give people the chance to have their say after the Labor Government failed to consult industry when developing the legislation."

Mr Northe said that all Victorian’s want to see the welfare of our animals placed of the highest priority; however the feedback from many locals is that the legislation in its current form could well have perverse outcomes.

"As an animal lover myself I strongly support the improvement of animal welfare for dogs and cats in Victoria and support any cracking down on dodgy breeders, but it’s important we don’t also put legitimate and dedicated people out of business," Mr Northe said.

"The Committee will give all Victorians an opportunity to have their say and to also put some facts on the table to ensure the legislation does not create perverse animal welfare outcomes."

Mr Northe said the Committee has only just been established but he expects public hearings will be held over the coming weeks. Further information on the inquiry can be found at: http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/eic/inquiries/inquiry/445
