Glass from the Victorian State Craft CollectionOblique showcases a selection of glass from the Victorian State Craft Collection (VSCC).The glass component of this collection has been on long-term loan to Latrobe Regional Gallery since 2002. By Portal Admin - 28th November 2016 - Back to News The VSCC comprises of 465 artworks in a range of mediums (glass, ceramics, metal, textiles, wood and leather) collected from 1977 to 1990, which were produced by some of the most innovative, experimental and non-conformist craft practitioners of the time.
Latrobe City Council’s arts director, Dr Mark Themann, said that the exhibition highlights works that use innovative techniques and combinations of processes such as sandblasting, devitrification, engraving, glass blowing, kiln forming, acid etching and frosting. The exhibition was curated by Shelley McDermott. Senior Curator, and Erin Mathews, Assistant Curator.
"Focus is placed on craftsmanship, form, refraction, colour, narrative and symbolic content. Selected works are bold and often combine functionality with personal expression, presenting a mesmerising and selective reflection of Australian studio glass during the 1980s," Dr Themann said.
Geoffrey Edwards, arts advisor, curator, lecturer and author of the glass chapter in the Victorian State Craft Collection Catalogue, will be in conversation at the Gallery on Friday 2 December to discuss the exhibition.
"This talk will cover the origins and growth of the international glass movement, its leading Australian exponents and selected works in this exhibition. Mr Edwards is the former director of the Geelong Art Gallery and we are delighted that he has agreed to travel to Morwell to share his expertise," Dr Themann concluded.
Oblique continues until 5 February 2017.
Join Geoffrey Edwards 'In Conversation' from 5pm to 6pm on Friday 2 December, RSVP Thursday 1 December.
