Volunteers Invited to Join in Latrobe’S Games Celebrations

Latrobe City is calling on interested individuals, groups or businesses to volunteer to take part in the municipality’s Commonwealth Games celebrations.

By Latrobe City Council - 11th August 2005 - Back to News

The City has been selected to host the Queen’s Baton Relay for an overnight stop in Traralgon on Tuesday 28 February 2006, and the Moe Racecourse is one of just four sites across regional Victoria chosen as a host for a Live Screen and Cultural Site throughout the duration of the Games in March next year.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said that a variety of volunteers were needed to ensure the celebrations in both locations were successful.

"We are looking for entertainers, community groups, trader associations, schools, artists; and for the Live Screen and Cultural Site at Moe, food vendors. Expressions of Interest are invited not just from Latrobe City, but from across Gippsland. We want to create a party atmosphere and ensure that our celebrations are open to all Gippslanders who want to join in the fun," Cr Lougheed explained.

"We are honoured that Latrobe City has been selected to host an overnight stop for the Queen’s Baton Relay. We are planning an array of welcome activities to celebrate the baton’s arrival and its journey through Traralgon, as well as Moe and Morwell the next day.

"For the Live Screen and Cultural Site, the celebrations will last for the duration of the Games, from Wednesday 15 to Sunday 26 March 2006. Visitors will be able to access live action from the Games sporting events as well as enjoying a variety of cultural performances from across the Commonwealth. The beauty of these Games celebrations is that there is something on offer for the sports fanatic as well as the lovers of world culture, music, dance and art. This will be a real festival of sport, culture and community celebrations.

"To enhance these performances from around the Commonwealth, we are looking for local and regional entertainers, bands, solo artists, comedians, choirs and MCs. We would encourage any Gippslanders in these fields to complete and return an Expression of Interest form," Cr Lougheed said.

"We really hope that the whole of Gippsland will come together to join in our celebrations here in Latrobe City. We are looking forward to warmly welcoming visitors from across Gippsland to our municipality to share in the excitement generated through these events," Cr Lougheed said.

"We are also looking forward to volunteers from across the region contributing their talents and services towards this celebration which will ensure it becomes one of the biggest cultural festivals Gippslanders have ever enjoyed," Cr Lougheed concluded.

Expression of Interest Forms for the 2006 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay celebration and the Regional Live Screen and Cultural Site are available from Latrobe City’s Service Centres in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon, via the internet at www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.

For those unable to access a service centre, or the internet, telephone 1300 367 700, to receive a copy of the form by mail.

Completed application forms should be returned by Friday 30 September 2005.
